This condition usually occurs in infants following an infection in the throat. There is a continuing fever with difficulty in swallowing. The neck is extended, breathing become noisy and in severe cases drooling of saliva occurs from the angle of mouth. Examination of the pharynx reveals swelling of posterior pharyngeal wall. There is usually adenitis in the neck.
